SE Systems were delighted to speak at ESB’s Smart Energy Services “A Pathway to Net Zero” event for large energy customers at their redeveloped ESB Head Office in Dublin. The panel of experts shared insights on key topics including Hydrogen, Heat Pumps, Intelligent Building Controls, Solar and Battery Storage and SEAI grants.
Paul Fitzpatrick, Head of Global Operations & Business Development chaired the event. Pat Fenlon Executive Director of Customer solutions outlined ESB’s 2040 strategy and he was followed by Colm O Callaghan, Customer solutions manager who outlined the Turn key solutions that’s the ESB can provide for large energy users. It was great to see some case study projects that SE Systems have got grant funding for through the SEAI’s Community Energy Grant.
Next up Jimmy Preston, Managing Director at Scott Group, presented some of the interesting smart building projects they are doing. Jimmy highlighted that reducing your lighting and HVAC energy baseline is key and that businesses can then use these savings to pay for your smart building infrastructure.
Alan Kealy Project Delivery Team Manager at ESB spoke about Heat Pumps as a means of decarbonising and the advantages and disadvantages when compared to CHP or biomass.
Eoghan McMahon, Customer Solutions Manager at ESB spoke about PV and how it can account for 20-40% of a business’s energy load. He also outlined the 3 main solutions for solar PV; Rooftop, ground mounted and Carport. It was great to see MSD Ballydine mentioned which is currently the largest Solar PV farm in the country at 7.3MW. SE Systems were the grant coordinator for this project, and we have since got them additional grant funding to expand this solar PV array in 2023.
Dara Connolly, Assets Manager at ESB discussed Battery Storage and flexibility on the grid as well as demand response revenue opportunities through EirGrid for large energy users who can guarantee to reduce their use on the grid at certain times during the day.
Jake O’Connell, Commercial Director at SE Systems, spoke about SEAI Community Energy Grant funding and the opportunities for Businesses that partner with ESB and SE Systems to deliver decarbonisation projects while also supporting Community projects.
Jake outlined how SE Systems have an experienced in-house team working on decarbonisation strategies and supporting organisations access grant funding. Delivering projects that use the best in class technologies is made possible by the strategic partnerships we have with contractors across the county. At SE Systems we believe that Collaboration is the best way forward for us to achieve Net Zero.
Sinead Treanor, Renewables and Storage Development Manager at ESB spoke about the role of Hydrogen in a net zero energy systems and discussed some of the very interesting lighthouse projects that ESB are involved in such as the Shannon lighthouse project with Shannon airport group. They are using the lighthouse projects to test and trail the technologies in hard to decarbonise sectors that are not suitable for electrification e.g. for long distance heavy duty transport.
The event finished with a lively Q&A session.
SE Systems are delighted to work with ESB Smart Energy Services to assist their clients to deliver innovative energy saving projects.
