SE Systems Shortlisted for SEAI Energy Awards 2025

We are delighted to announce that SE Systems has been shortlisted for the SEAI Energy Awards 2025 in the Residential Energy Upgrade category.

This recognition celebrates our commitment to delivering transformational energy upgrades that create lasting impact for communities across Ireland. The shortlisted project, Lion House, is a shining example of how collaboration, innovation, and a deep sense of social responsibility can change lives.

Located in Douglas, Cork, this housing facility is run by the Douglas & District Lions Club, providing homes for 18 elderly residents. The buildings were facing serious challenges with outdated storage heating, poor insulation, and rising energy bills.

From Cold and Costly to Warm and Efficient

When Douglas Lions first approached SE Systems, they were seeking window upgrades. During our initial site visit, our team quickly identified a bigger opportunity: to design a holistic retrofit strategy that would completely transform comfort levels, slash running costs, and dramatically improve energy performance.

The results speak for themselves:

  • 18 apartments were upgraded from an average E1 BER to A1, the highest possible energy rating.
  • Works included attic and cavity wall insulation, new windows and doors, air-to-air and air-to-water heat pumps, mechanical ventilation, and solar PV installations.
  • The project achieved a total energy saving of 6,183 kWh/m²/year across the 18 apartments alone.

“The quality of life for our residents has improved 100%,” said Liam Moloney, Manager of Lion House.

“SE Systems made sure there was as little disruption as possible during the works. Their professionalism, care, and support were outstanding, and I would have no hesitation in recommending them for future retrofits.”

Driving Impact Through Community Investment

This project was only possible thanks to a unique funding model that combined the SEAI Community Energy Grant with the SE Systems Community Fund, which provided almost 95% of the total funding required.

The SE Systems Community Fund was created to support local organisations on their journey to carbon neutrality, ensuring vital services like Douglas Lions Club can remain sustainable for years to come.

“As a proud northside Cork company, we are deeply committed to supporting our local communities,” said John O’Leary, CEO at SE Systems.

“The Lions House project perfectly demonstrates what can be achieved when we work together. Our long-standing relationship with SEAI has been instrumental in delivering projects like this, and we’re incredibly proud to be recognised on a national stage.”

A Win for People and Planet

The impact of this project extends far beyond energy savings. The upgrades have:

  • Reduced energy bills for residents to a fraction of previous costs, with one resident reporting their electricity bill dropping from €150 to just €35.
  • Created warmer, healthier homes with improved indoor air quality.
  • Lowered carbon emissions while helping Ireland meet its 2030 climate targets.
  • Delivered a scalable model of sustainable retrofitting that can be replicated nationwide.

The winners of the SEAI Energy Awards 2025 will be announced later this year. Being shortlisted is a tremendous honour and a testament to the hard work of our team, our partners, and our community.

We extend our sincere thanks to SEAI for their continued collaboration and to the Douglas & District Lions Club for trusting SE Systems to deliver this ambitious project.

This recognition reaffirms our belief that when communities thrive, everyone benefits – and together, we can build a cleaner, more sustainable future.
