Understanding the Grants Currently Available to You

Irish homeowners can currently avail of three different SEAI grant options for residential projects: Deep Retrofit, Fully Funded Home Energy Upgrade, and Individual Home Energy Upgrade Grants. Each of these grants has its own criteria and requirements, which we will explain below.

Deep Retrofit

A deep retrofit – or whole house retrofit, can significantly improve your home’s energy efficiency, making it more sustainable and cost-effective. This process involves upgrading multiple aspects of your home’s structure and energy systems to achieve a higher building energy rating.

With the government’s grant support, conducting a deep retrofit will not only enhance your living environment but also pay for itself over time through substantial energy savings.

Window and Door replacement

Advanced energy upgrades

Heating System, Solar PV for generating electricity, A Heat Pump,
to replace oil or gas, Demand control ventilation or mechanical
ventilation with heat Recovery.

Fully Funded Home Energy Upgrade SEAI Grant

This grant offers fully funded home energy upgrades, completely free of charge, for homeowners who receive specific welfare payments and meet the eligibility criteria.

By taking advantage of this scheme, you can transform your home into a warmer, healthier, and more cost-effective haven. Imagine lower energy bills, a reduced carbon footprint, and a more comfortable living space for you and your family.

What's included in a Fully Funded Home Energy Upgrade?

With the government’s grant support, you can upgrade many aspects of your home at no cost to you.

Insulation upgrades

Attic & Cavity Wall, Internal and External Wall Insulation and windows are occasionally recommended.

Secondary Work

Lagging jackets, draught-proofing and energy efficient lighting and new heating systems are occasionally recommended.

Registered Contractor Appointed

The SEAI will appoint a contractor for your project. SE Systems are recognised as the largest deliverer of this program nationally. and our expert team can help make this journey easy for you.

Welfare Payment Eligibility

Requirement

You must own and live in your own home.
This must be your main residence, where you live most days of the week

Your home was built and occupied before 2006. This means the ESB meter was connected and the property was lived in prior to 2006.

You receive one of the following welfare payments:

  • Fuel Allowance as part of the National Fuel Scheme.
  • Job Seekers Allowance for over six months and have a child under seven years of age.
  • Working Family Payment One-Parent Family Payment
  • Domiciliary Care Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance and live with the person you are caring for. Disability Allowance for over six months and have a child under seven years of age.

Individual Home Energy Upgrade Grant

The SEAI’s Individual Home Energy Upgrade Grant empowers homeowners and private landlords to manage their own energy upgrades, providing the flexibility to implement changes at your own pace and within your budget. This scheme is designed to make energy upgrades accessible and manageable, so you can enhance your home’s efficiency and reduce your energy bills without stress.

With a step-by-step approach, you can spread out the cost and effort over time. Once the upgrades are complete and the paperwork is submitted, the grant funds are paid directly to you, making it a straightforward process.

What works are included under the Individual Home Energy Upgrade Grants

Undertaking Individual Home Energy Upgrade Grants will enhance the comfort of your home at a lower cost.
Over time, these upgrades will also lead to substantial energy savings. SE Systems can facilitate the following works and grants.

Insulation upgrades

External wall insulation & attic insulation.

Heating and Controls

Heating controls and range of heat pump systems, and your technical assessment.

Solar Energy

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels

Qualifying Criteria for Individual Home Energy Upgrade Grants

Additional funding to carry out these projects is now also available through the Low-Cost Home Energy Upgrade Loan Scheme.

Criterion

Be the owner of a property built and occupied before 2011

Be the owner of a property built and occupied before 2021

Use a contractor from the SEAI’s registered list

Have work done that meets the required standards

Get a BER after the works are done using a BER assessor from SEAI’s National Register

Requirement

This applies for insulation and heating control systems grants

Be the owner of a property built and occupied before 2021

Ensure that your contractor is approved by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

All work carried out must comply with the standards set by SEAI and other relevant regulatory bodies.

Obtain a Building Energy Rating (BER) assessment post-renovation from an assessor listed on SEAI’s National Register of BER Assessors.
