Solar energy will put you in control of your bills and break the limits of traditional power. Feel the benefit of replacing costly, unstable grid electricity with reliable, cost-effective PV solar panel solutions.
Own Your Own Power and Save on Bills
With Solar PV Panels, your home or business can generate its own electricity, cutting reliance on the grid and protecting you from ever-changing energy prices.
Choose to sell your surplus power back to the grid or use a Solar PV battery to store your excess energy for the future. You could even use a hot water diverter to use extra electricity to heat water and charge your electric vehicle — all for free.
Improved BER Rating
Every property has a Building Energy Rating (BER). The higher your BER rating, the better.
With solar panels, you will be cutting energy use, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing efficiency. The result? A higher BER rating, lower energy bills, a smaller carbon footprint, and increased property value.
SEAI Grants Incentives
If you’re ready to take the next step in securing a more sustainable future for Ireland, you could be eligible for grants from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).
These government-backed solar incentives can significantly lower the cost of solar panel installation in Ireland, offering grants of up to €2,100 for homes. Was your home built and occupied before December 31st 2020? If so, you could be eligible for an additional SEAI Solar PV incentive.
For businesses and commercial properties in Ireland looking for solar PV installations, you may receive funding through the non-domestic microgen scheme, as well as a grant of up to 20% available with a full deep retrofit thanks to the SEAI’s Community Energy Grant.
There truly isn’t a better time to start your Solar PV journey.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What are solar panels?
The term ‘solar panel’ can refer to a wide range of solar technologies. It is often used interchangeably between the panels that generate electricity and those that generate heat. Solar panels which produce electricity are referred to in the industry as ‘solar photovoltaic (PV) modules.
These are panels made from materials which generate DC electricity when exposed to light. When considering purchasing solar panels it is important to consider whether you would like a system which generates electricity (solar PV panels) or a system which heats water (solar thermal panels). The questions in this document are all in relation to the electricity generating panels.
How much electricity will solar panels generate?
The amount of electricity generated annually will depend on a range of factors including the hardware chosen, size of system, the geographical location and the direction in which the panels are installed.
With the most common silicon solar panels typically 1 sq. m of panels will generate ~150W of power on a clear sunny day (that’s enough to power a laptop computer).
A home solar PV system sized at 20 sq. m (~3kW) would generate around 2,600kWh of electricity a year if well-located, over 40% of the typical annual electricity demand of an Irish home.
Do solar panels work in Ireland?
Yes, solar PV systems will still generate electricity when there is daylight, so they will still function on overcast days in Ireland.
In these conditions they will not be able to produce power at their maximum rated capacity (the figure in kilowatts (kW)), rather at some fraction of this figure.
Solar panels will perform at their best in direct sunlight and therefore solar PV systems in Ireland will typically produce less than other, sunnier countries such as Spain.
As mentioned above, a home solar PV system sized at 20 sq. m (~3kW) would generate around 2,600kWh of electricity a year if welllocated, over 40% of the typical annual electricity demand of an Irish home.
How much do solar panels cost?
The cost of purchasing and installing solar panels has come down considerably over the last 10 years.
The cost of a solar PV system depends on a range of factors including the hardware chosen, size of system, accessibility of the roof or site, and the installer used.
Broadly speaking home PV systems should range from around €1,500 – €2,000 per kW installed (ex-VAT), but prices will vary depending on the factors mentioned above.
Are solar panels right for my home?
Deciding whether solar panels are suitable for your home involves several important factors to ensure they are an effective and economical choice.
1. How Much of the Generated Electricity Will You Use?
Solar PV systems produce electricity exclusively during daylight hours, with the peak output typically occurring around midday. If your household is often unoccupied during these hours, such as when you’re at work, much of the energy generated might go unused. It’s also worth noting that approximately 75% of a solar PV system’s annual energy production occurs between May and September.
To maximise the benefits of solar energy, you’ll need to consider your household’s energy usage patterns and how they align with the system’s electricity generation. Without additional technologies like battery storage, any unused electricity will likely be exported to the grid.
2. Is Your Roof Suitable for Solar Panels?
The condition, orientation, and shading of your roof play a significant role in determining the efficiency of a solar PV system. Ideally, a roof should be in good condition, south-facing, and free from obstructions such as overhanging trees or nearby buildings that could cause shading.
Before installation, assess whether your roof is structurally sound and capable of supporting solar panels for years to come. If in doubt, a professional evaluation can help determine your roof’s suitability.
3. Don’t Forget Other Energy-Saving Improvements
Solar panels are just one part of a comprehensive approach to improving your home’s energy efficiency. Before investing in solar PV, consider implementing other energy-saving measures, such as upgrading insulation, draught-proofing, installing energy-efficient windows, or enhancing boiler controls. Exploring other renewable energy technologies may also complement your solar investment.
Consulting with a BER (Building Energy Rating) assessor can provide valuable insights and help prioritise the most effective upgrades for your property.
By thoroughly evaluating your energy needs, roof suitability, and other potential home improvements, you can make an informed decision about whether solar panels are the right choice for your household.
Do I need planning permission to install solar PV on my roof?
In many cases, smaller solar PV systems are exempt from planning permission. Specifically, installations that are under 12 square metres in size and cover less than 50% of the total roof area typically qualify for planning exemptions.
For larger systems exceeding these limits, planning permission is generally required. If your project involves a significant installation, it’s crucial to factor in the additional time and steps needed to secure approval from your local planning authority.
