Solar Panels for Irish Schools, Colleges, and Universities

Empowering Ireland’s educational facilities to reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs — while educating future generations.

BENEFITS OF RETROFITS FOR SCHOOLS

Why Invest in Solar Panels for Schools?

We understand that schools are always on the lookout for sustainable, cost-effective solutions to improve energy efficiency. Given the busy nature of the education sector, we also know that this priority tends to fall to the bottom of the list.

Our team at SE Systems is here to provide a no-fuss, simple solution, providing all the information you need about solar panels for educational facilities in one place. We believe that solar should be accessible to every Irish school, and we aim to make our mission true with PV installations backed by years of quality, expertise, and dedication.

Reduce Your Energy Costs & Free Up School Budgets

Educational buildings use a large amount of electricity daily. From lighting up classrooms to powering IT equipment, solar panels offer the chance for your building to generate its own renewable energy while reducing electricity bills.

Free Electricity During School Hours

Most educational buildings operate during daylight hours, making solar energy an ideal solution. School operations generally align within peak sunlight hours (11am – 4pm), so most of your generated electricity can be used immediately.

Government Grants & Funding for Solar Panels

Educational facilities in Ireland can benefit from SEAI grants and the Solar for Schools Programme, which provides full funding for up to 6kWp of solar PV panels. Our experts will help you with the grant process, ensuring you receive all the government-backed benefits of solar.

Sell Excess Energy Back to the Grid

Thanks to Ireland’s Microgeneration Support Scheme (MSS), it’s easy for schools to export any excess energy that isn’t used back to the national grid for financial compensation. This means you can still generate income, even in the quiet summer holidays.

COMMERCIAL SOLAR PANELS FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Thanks to the 2022 exemption for educational buildings, most schools in Ireland do not require planning permission for solar panel installations covering up to 300m².

However, to be exempt from planning permission, these solar PV installations must be mounted on the roof, must not alter the building’s appearance, and must not be on a listed building or protected area.

A 6 kWp solar PV system installed in a school can generate roughly 6,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per year. As of January 2025, the average electricity price in Ireland is €0.3438 per kWh. As a result, an Irish school with a solar panel installation could save around €2,063 per year by generating its own electricity.
