Overview
In April 2021, Keith Hickey and his family moved into their new build home in Bandon, Co. Cork. With their home fully powered by electricity, including a modern heat pump for heating, they were eager to find a sustainable way to manage their energy costs.
Just a year ago, they decided to install a Solar PV system with SE Systems, ensuring their home was both energy-efficient and future-proofed. The result? With almost no electricity bills and a substantial credit balance with their provider, heading into the winter months.
The Challenge
Keith’s home was designed to be a fully electric, modern home with a heat pump system. This meant that electricity was their only energy bill, making them highly exposed to rising energy prices.
As a new build, the property did not qualify for SEAI solar grants, but Keith understood that the long-term savings made Solar PV a wise investment. The challenge was to create a system that would:

- Professional installation with minimal disruption to the household
The installation was completed efficiently, including full safety measures and post-installation support. With the Myenergi monitoring app, the family can now track their consumption and generation in real-time.
The Impact
The results have been transformational. In just the first year:
- Total energy paid to the provider: €40
- Heading into winter with €500 credit already built up
- Zero expected electricity bills for the second year running
- Near-total self-sufficiency during the summer months
- Reduced household carbon footprint by 2 tonnes annually – equal to planting 353 trees or avoiding 39 long-haul flights
