Summary
Client: Barretstown
Location: Kildare
Sector: Residential
The Challenge
Barretstown offers free, specially designed camps for children and their families living with cancer and other serious illnesses. This is a place where families are given a chance to unwind, destress and enjoy quality family-time together in a fun, safe and relaxing environment. As part of Barretstown’s mission to become carbon neutral by 2030, a number of initial projects were identified. The accommodation for the children, families and staff needed to be modernised requiring remodelling the interiors as well as upgrading the energy efficiency to provide a low carbon comfortable accommodation. The challenge was to combine the building refurbishment as well as the energy upgrades for the client while working on a constricted site with tight timelines to ensure the cottage handovers aligned with the camp schedules.
The Solution
SE Systems carried out three energy retrofit projects at Barretstown. This included a deep retrofit to 240 bed camper accommodation buildings, installed EV chargers, upgrades to staff accommodation buildings as well as upgrading the fabric of the two gate lodges. In alignment with the deep retrofit project, SE Systems also worked with McCauley Daye O’Connell Architects to carry out turnkey internal refurbishment works to the camper accommodation. The project was completed in nine months and SE Systems ensured all aspects of the project were completed to a very high standard all while the childrens’ camps continued to operate each weekend.
We provided a one stop shop solution for the client by acting as Main Contractor including undertaking the role of Project Supervisor Construction Stage (PSCS). We provided a turnkey range of Energy Solution Services from initial project conception through to project implementation, handover, and maintenance. We also managed the SEAI grant as project coordinator and the project also received additional funding via SE Systems Community Fund.
The Impact
Annual Energy savings of 463914 kWh were achieved as a result of a combination of the following works included across the four projects.
- External Wall Insulation
- Heat Pump Installation
- Windows installation
- Door's installation
- External LED Lighting Upgrade
- EV Chargers installation in the main car park.
These upgrades will provide a foundation to assist Barretstown in becoming a Carbon Neutral facility by 2030. They will provide more comfortable accommodation for the children and families using them, as well as substantially cutting the energy costs and carbon emissions for the charity. Another key feature is that the renewable heating system can be managed remotely by the facilities team.
The next stage of Barretstown’s decarbonisation strategy includes reviewing site PV options and biodiversity enhancement.
SE Systems were incredibly easy to work with. They demonstrated huge flexibility despite our best efforts to drive them crazy with families coming in every weekend and having to work around our schedule here at Barretstown but they were also great because they introduced us to their corporate partners and we got a lot of support through that and also navigating our way through the grant application process they were a great help to us on that
