Summary
Project: Dawn Pork
Location: Waterford
Sector: Agriculture
The Challenge
Dawn Pork had an uninsulated roof that was coming towards the end of its life while also battling significant energy costs at their premises in Grannagh. The challenge involved improving energy efficiency to the fabric of the building, reducing escalating energy bills and reducing the CO2 emissions and fossil fuel dependency in the facility.
The Solution
There was a significant amount of work to be done on the facility, so a strategic approach was taken to split the project into a multi annual works, which optimised the financial impact on the company. This solution ensured that the necessary energy and carbon reduction targets were met, while also maximising all grants that were available, at a rate that was acceptable by the key stakeholders to the facility.
The first two stages of the project included the following energy upgrade solutions:
PV Panel Installation (2021):
- Installed a 260.28kWp solar PV system
- Roof Insulation
- Implemented a cross-site program for monitoring and verification, optimising water units, electrical controls, conveyors, and adding V.S.D. units for electricity savings.
- Replaced the old refrigeration system with a more efficient Howden XRV 204/165 unit.
PV Panel Expansion (2022):
- Expanded the existing PV system by adding an extra 326kWp solar PV system, totalling 586.38kWp.
- Upgraded insulation in an older section of the building’s roof, improving U value from >2W/m²K to 0.047 W/m²K.

The Impact
The works carried out so far have resulted in decreased heat load due to the fabric insulation upgrades, they are now generating their own electricity on site which has resulted in a significant decrease on their fossil fuel requirements. The energy monitoring also allows them to have real time data on the facility so that any issue can be identified and rectified as they arise.
The implemented solutions resulted in the following energy savings and renewable energy generation at the Dawn Pork facility:
2021 Implementation:
- Total Energy Consumption: 2,385,451.25 kWh
- Thermal Savings: 104,814.182 kWh
- Electrical Savings: 40,722.5 kWh
- Renewable Energy Generated: 23,385.637 kWh
2022 Expansion:
- Total Energy Consumption: 574,916.48 kWh
- Thermal Savings: 12,342.32 kWh
- Renewable Energy Generated: 29,299.433 kWh
