The Challenge
Dunnes Stores one of Ireland’s largest retailers with 134 stores across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Spain. The challenge was to pilot specific energy saving measures in selected Dunnes Stores outlets that could then be scaled and replicated across multiple sites across Ireland so that significant energy savings could be achieved, allowing Dunnes Stores to meet their Energy reduction targets as well as safeguarding the business against rising energy costs.
The Solution
Energy Audits were conducted of a number of Dunnes Stores facilities to identify potential energy efficiency initiatives for the stores. Following a strategic review, 13 stores across Ireland were selected to deploy these pilot energy saving projects.
SE Systems applied for the SEAI Community Energy Grant on behalf of Dunnes Stores, working in partnership with Enerpower their selected contractor.
In 2023, 13 stores received the following package of energy efficiency upgrades:
- Solar PV Systems to generate electricity on site
- Retrofit ECO Blades into the Refrigeration System to improve the energy efficiency of the existing refrigeration units
- Installed Heat Pumps and Heat Recovery units for recovering the waste heat from the refrigeration system
The Impact
This partnership demonstrated how a large retailer can achieve their climate action targets while also improving energy efficiency in their buildings, lowering their energy bills and carbon emissions in a cost-effective way through accessing SEAI grant funding. The measures installed are a proven technology that can be replicated across other similar stores, resulting in further energy savings across their building estate. Dunnes Stores’ commitment to sustainability reflects their dedication to responsible business practices and continual improvement processes.

- Thermal = 2633299 kWh
- Electrical = 293500 kWh
- Renewables = 3605453 kWh
