Mater private hospital
Summary
Client: Mater Private Hospital
Site: Dublin
Sector: Heathcare
The Challenge
The main challenge was to complete a hospital-wide retrofit project at the Mater Private Hospital while ensuring that there was minimal disruption to the day-to-day use of the facilities. This required extensive planning and management of Health and Safety, works scheduling and notifications of impending shutdowns so as not to affect spaces with 24/7 operational demands and critical care units.
The Solution
SE Systems collaborated with Veolia to support them in securing grant funding for the Mater Hospital project. This was a comprehensive energy upgrade initiative in a vital healthcare setting. The project targeted specific areas within the hospital, including 24/7 wards, operating theatres, psychiatric wards, and teaching facilities.
The solutions that were implemented were tailored for each area, incorporating a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system serving 10 buildings through District Heating. Additionally, a Building Management System (BMS) was installed to control various components across the Mater Campus, including 5 Air Handling Units (AHU) and the Centralised Natural Ventilation Radiator circuit. The hospital’s energy upgrades also included LED lighting upgrades, window and door replacements, and HVAC system optimisations.
The Impact
This project’s impact was significant, resulting in a total energy consumption reduction of 15,434,620 kWh. This included notable reductions in thermal (2,837,536 kWh) and electrical (12,597,084 kWh) usage. The hospital experienced enhanced control strategies, improved HVAC systems, and upgraded lighting, leading to substantial cost savings. This project was fundamentally important to the ongoing support of the operation and maintenance of one of Ireland’s leading critical health care providers.
