St Michael’s Tennis club

Summary
Client: St Michael’s Tennis Club
Location: Cork
Sector: Sports & Leisure
The Challenge
St Michael’s is a vibrant community Tennis Club in Blackrock Cork City and has been serving the community for 100 years. It has 5 fully floodlit courts and a practice wall. There is also a clubhouse which contains changing rooms with showers and toilets and kitchen facilities to cater for the various events throughout the year. The flood lighting for the courts was old and they were using a large amount of energy, resulting in high energy bills for the club. The clubhouse building was also in need of repair and was very difficult to heat. The challenge was to improve the club’s energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and create a more sustainable environment.
The Solution
An energy audit was conducted identifying the key areas in the club that could be upgraded, along with projected estimated savings. The club decided to carry out energy efficiency upgrades in two phases. Upgrading the outdoor lighting was the priority and the court lighting for the 5 courts were upgraded to LED lights in 2018.
In 2021, the focus turned to the timber clad clubhouse. There were limitations with insulating the walls due to the age and structure of the building. Following a detailed review of the energy audit and after receiving quotes from contractors it was decided to carryout the following energy saving upgrades.
- Installed New Windows and Doors
- Installed 157m² of Attic Insulation
- Installed 36 energy-efficient LED lights for improved illumination

The Impact
This two-phase project resulted in reduced energy consumption and operational costs for the tennis club. The energy efficiency upgrades carried out by the club demonstrate their commitment to sustainability as well as contributing to a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective facility for the community.
