The Challenge

In 2009, Tesco became the first business globally to set the ambitious target to become a zero-carbon business by 2050. In 2017, it committed to science-based climate targets for its own operations on a 1.5-degree trajectory, in line with the aspiration of the Paris Agreement.

One key activity Tesco wanted to focus on was accelerating operational decarbonisation across key emission hotspots such as refrigeration, heating, and transport.

One of the main challenges associated with this project was to upgrade the existing inefficient refrigeration units and outdoor packs to new energy saving and lower global warming potential (GWP) equivalents. Significant care and project coordination was required during the installation phase of this project to ensure all works, carried out at night, did not disrupt the day to day store operations.

The Solution

In 2021, five stores were selected to receive refrigeration upgrades. As a result of the energy savings achieved in 2021, Tesco continued their decarbonisation journey by carrying out energy upgrade projects in an  additional forty one stores in 2022. The energy upgrade measures implemented across these stores consisted of refrigeration case upgrades, external co2 pack upgrades, the installation of heat pumps and refrigeration cabinet doors, supported further by the installation of roof mounted solar PV to generate renewable energy.  Overcoming one of the project’s main challenges and mitigating operational risk to Tesco Ireland was achieved by the detailed project management process adopted by ESB Smart Energy Services. This entailed constant communication and strategic planning with Tesco’s key stakeholders and store managers, technical design and equipment review, management and coordination of specialist sub contractors, including all health and safety requirements.

The Impact

These projects mark another step in Tesco’s decarbonisation targets, while also demonstrating that the measures installed achieved significant energy and carbon emission savings set which will allow replicability across Tesco’s estate. These projects also highlight to Tesco shoppers that they are shopping somewhere sustainability is core value. The impact also highlights that large multi-site energy saving initiatives can be achieved when key strategic partners are involved and there is buy-in from all parties and stakeholders involved from the beginning.
