The Challenge
The Millenium Centre, a key public office building belonging to Louth County Council had a large underfloor heating system fuelled by gas. It was a very hard space to heat with high energy costs. Louth County Council were keen to reduce their heat load, improve the energy performance in the building as well as combat high energy bills. They engaged with the Energy Team and SE Systems to advise on the best energy saving solutions for the building.
The Solution
SE Systems organised a detailed energy audit and following a review with the client, it was decided to upgrade the heating system, transitioning from a gas boiler with 80% efficiency to advanced heat pump technologies. Three 40 kW Air-to-Water Heat Pumps were installed, accompanied by a 500L hot water cylinder. This configuration ensured a balanced approach, with 50% of the system dedicated to heating and the remaining 50% for hot water needs.
SE Systems collaborated closely with Louth County Council and The Energy Team, ensuring the seamless execution of this energy upgrade project in the public office facilities over a 6-week period.
The Impact
Louth County Council are at the forefront of adapting government policy and energy efficiency targets into actionable projects that will reduce their carbon emissions and this project has reduced their environmental impact.
This project has solved the issue in the cold part of the building and made the working environment more comfortable for staff and the public using the building. It has assisted Louth County Council on their journey away from fossil fuels in a cost-effective manner after receiving grant funding from the SEAI Community Grant.
A year after the project has been completed M&V figures have validated the savings. The implemented heating system upgrade resulted in a notable reduction in energy consumption, saving 47,135 kWh annually, demonstrating the successful transition to more efficient and sustainable heat pump technologies.
Thanks to SE Systems, I have achieved my vision of creating a low carbon A1 rated eco-friendly home.
